Proposal for urgent excavation of newly discovered brick tomb in Dan Phuong district (Hanoi)

Managers and experts surveyed the scene and discovered a brick tomb in Dan Phuong, Hanoi.

Dan Phuong District People's Committee has directed departments and offices to conduct field inspections and discovered a brick-built structure about 800 meters from the starting point of the road under construction, under the rice field where the road runs through, in the East-West direction.

Immediately after the discovery, the District People's Committee assigned the District Department of Culture and Information to report in writing the content of this discovery to the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports; at the same time, directed the Hong Ha Commune People's Committee and the implementing unit to temporarily stop, maintain the current status of the project, and assign people to watch over it 24/7 while waiting for urgent excavation.

Implementing the direction of Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Vu Thu Ha, Director of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports on the urgent excavation of brick architecture (brick tomb style) discovered at the project to expand and upgrade the road in Hong Ha commune (Dan Phuong district), Hanoi Museum coordinated with the district and the Institute of Archaeology to organize a meeting to assess the value and agree on an urgent excavation plan.

Some broken bricks were picked up during construction.

Here, based on the current status of the relics and artifacts, especially through the type of construction materials (rectangular bricks and grapefruit-shaped bricks), the delegates made a preliminary assessment that this is a brick tomb dating back to the 1st - 4th century, a fairly common type of burial in Vietnam, especially in Hanoi, which has been discovered and researched in recent years such as: brick tombs in Nam Thang Long Urban Area (Ciputra), Duc Tu commune (Dong Anh), Pham Van Dong street (Bac Tu Liem)...

Experts and managers have agreed to propose that the Hanoi People's Committee soon issue a decision to allow urgent archaeological excavations to protect and promote the value of relics and artifacts. At the same time, the Dan Phuong District People's Committee directed specialized departments and offices to closely coordinate with the Hanoi Museum and the Institute of Archaeology to soon develop an excavation plan.
