After the Ministry of Transport adjusts the planning of Phu Quoc airport, Vietnam Airports Corporation will report to the competent authority to invest in passenger terminal T2, increasing the total capacity of this airport to 10 million passengers/year.
Phu Quoc airport's passenger terminal currently has a capacity of 4 million passengers/year, but in 2022 it will serve 5.5 million passengers.
Vietnam Airports Corporation - JSC (ACV) said so when reporting to the Ministry of Transport about the possibility of arranging investment capital to expand Phu Quoc airport.
According to ACV, Phu Quoc Airport is currently a 4E-class international airport, with a 3,000m runway, 45m wide, and a parking lot with 14 parking positions during peak hours. Phu Quoc Airport's passenger terminal, put into use in 2012, has a 2-level design, with a capacity of 2.65 million passengers/year. By 2018, the terminal was expanded to increase the total capacity to 4 million passengers/year.
By 2022, Phu Quoc airport will have welcomed more than 5.5 million passengers with about 90 - 100 flights/day. It is expected that by 2025, the number of passengers passing through Phu Quoc airport will reach about 7 million.
Thus, Phu Quoc airport has experienced strong growth, far exceeding the approved planned capacity targets. The aircraft parking lots, passenger terminals... are overloaded.
Therefore, ACV believes that investing in upgrading Phu Quoc airport in the current period is extremely urgent to meet future transportation needs and improve the quality of passenger services.
According to ACV, this enterprise has developed a medium-term investment plan for the period 2021 - 2025 and submitted it to the State Capital Management Committee at enterprises. In which, it has arranged for the implementation of investment in construction and upgrading of items at Phu Quoc airport.
ACV leaders said that immediately after the adjusted planning of Phu Quoc airport for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, is approved by the Ministry of Transport, ACV will report to the State Capital Management Committee at enterprises to deploy investment in passenger terminal T2 with a capacity of 6 million passengers/year, increasing the total operating capacity of Phu Quoc airport to 10 million passengers/year. At the same time, invest in upgrading the aircraft parking lot to ensure synchronous operation.
