On the morning of January 5 (November 24 of the lunar calendar), Chi Linh City held an incense offering ceremony to commemorate the 653rd death anniversary of the famous person Chu Van An (November 26, 1370 - November 26, 2023).
The famous Chu Van An was born in 1292 with the pen name Tieu An, his given name Linh Triet, from Quang Liet village, Thanh Dam district (now Van village, Thanh Liet commune, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi city). From a young age, he was famous for being upright, maintaining his integrity, not seeking fame or fortune, having extensive knowledge, being upright and respected by everyone.
With outstanding talent and virtue, when he was over 30 years old, he was invited by King Tran Minh Tong to be the Rector of the Imperial Academy to teach the crown prince and the children of the mandarins in the court. During the reign of Tran Du Tong, because the king loved to have fun and neglected state affairs, he submitted a petition to behead seven flatterers, but the king did not listen, so he resigned from office and returned to Phuong Hoang mountain (Chi Linh) to build a house to teach, find medicinal plants to cure people's diseases, and write books and poems.
On November 26, Canh Ty year, he passed away here at the age of 79. In memory of his great achievements, the royal court held a funeral, posthumously awarded him the title of Duke, built a Temple and Shrine to worship him, carved a statue, and erected a stele to immortalize his name.
In November 2019, at the 40th Session of the General Assembly of UNESCO Member States, Chu Van An was honored and passed a resolution to join Vietnam in commemorating the 650th anniversary of his death in 2020. Thus, along with National Hero Nguyen Trai, Great Poet Nguyen Du, President Ho Chi Minh, teacher Chu Van An is the fourth Vietnamese person to be honored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The incense offering ceremony is an opportunity for the cadres and people of Chi Linh City in particular and the people of the whole country in general, especially the young generation, to express their gratitude and admiration for the typical teacher of Vietnam. This is also an opportunity for us to continue to affirm the great spiritual values that the famous Chu Van An left for future generations.
