On October 27, US Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips confirmed that he will join the race to become the party's candidate for the 2024 US presidential election, although he previously left open the possibility that he would not participate.
In an interview with CBS News, Mr. Phillips said he would not sit still in the context of current data showing that the Democratic Party will face an "emergency situation" in the November 2024 election.
A spokesman for Mr. Phillips confirmed to The Hill that he will file for the Democratic presidential nomination, as October 27 is the last day the party accepts registrations.
According to the US Federal Election Commission, Mr. Phillips filed his notice of candidacy on October 26.
Mr. Phillips, a Minnesota representative who has served three terms in the US Congress, has repeatedly called for a competitive primary election within the Democratic Party to choose a presidential candidate instead of letting Mr. Biden run unopposed.
In a new statement, Congressman Phillips affirmed his respect for what President Biden has done for the country, but that is the past, and the upcoming election is the future.
Last August, Senator Phillips signaled that he would not run against Mr. Biden but supported other candidates entering the race.
Previously, Congressman Robert F. Kennedy Jr. competed to become the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, but earlier this month, he withdrew from the race and chose to run directly as an independent candidate.
