Hanoi players hunt for rare 1979 Honda Cub 50 for 100 million VND

Mr. Do Quang Tu (87 Phung Hung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) said that he had just "hunted" and bought a 1979 Honda Cub 50, a rare and hard-to-find motorbike in Vietnam today.

According to Mr. Tu, this Cub 50, although 44 years old, is still original, without any modifications or replacement parts. Up to now, this car has only rolled 5,000km, equivalent to only running about 114km per year. For such an old car, this is a surprising number.

"The owner of the car is an elderly man in Hanoi and I had to convince him for a long time before he agreed to pay nearly 100 million VND. After 44 years of daily use, the previous owner still kept the car intact, which is truly admirable. Even the engine looks 'moldy' over time and is no longer beautiful, but it is sturdy and starts up crisply when you slip your foot," said Mr. Tu.

Because of the long time, even though it has been carefully preserved, the Honda Super Cub 50 still cannot avoid signs of "aging" over time in areas that are easily affected by temperature or the environment such as the engine case, handlebars, chrome-plated lamp housing, front and rear brake clusters. The rest of the paint is shiny kohlrabi color. Details such as the switch cluster, wiring system, trunk pair, tires, keys, etc. are all "genuine" spare parts, unchanged from when they left the Honda factory in Japan nearly half a century ago.

Faced with the "aging" positions over the years, when asked whether he would invest in renovating the car or not, Mr. Tu shook his head and said: "With 'antiques' like this, the more original you can keep them, the more valuable they will be. Because if you try to renovate them, it will be difficult to get past the discerning eyes of antique car enthusiasts."

According to Mr. Tu, the Honda Cub 79 is equipped with a 4-stroke SOHC engine, 50cc capacity, 2 valves, air-cooled with an engine speed of 7,000 rpm, helping the vehicle reach a maximum speed of 80km/h. This model is equipped with a 3-speed gearbox and later some models are also equipped with a 4-speed gearbox, helping the vehicle operate smoothly and carry heavy loads well.

The 1979 Honda Super Cub 50cc (also known as Honda Cub) is one of the manual motorbike models that was once considered a "treasure" for any owner. Later, the Cubs were forgotten when more modern motorbikes appeared more and more in Vietnam.

Nowadays, the nostalgic trend is flourishing, Super Cubs from the 70s and 80s are gradually becoming popular among car enthusiasts because of their timeless design, easy to repair and restore, and relatively cheap price, only a few million VND can buy.

However, old cars like Cub 50, 78 "Dame", 79 "winged engine" or 81 "golden teardrop" in original condition like Mr. Tu's car are still very hard to find and always expensive.
