On January 6, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared in court accused of funding an illegal campaign in a deal with late Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi.

Mr Sarkozy is one of 12 suspects on trial, including former close aides, accused of colluding with Mr Gaddafi to illegally finance his victorious 2007 election campaign. All the defendants deny the charges.

If convicted, Mr Sarkozy, 69, faces up to 10 years in prison for concealment, embezzlement and illegal campaign financing.

Lawyer Christophe Ingrain, defending Mr. Sarkozy, stated that his client had been waiting for this four-month trial and would refute the prosecution's untrue arguments.

The trial began just a fortnight after France's top appeals court rejected Mr Sarkozy's appeal against a one-year prison sentence for abuse of power, which he will serve under house arrest instead of incarceration. The trial is expected to last until April 10 this year.

Mr Sarkozy has been convicted in two cases and is under investigation in two others.
