Brazilian Federal Police announced the arrest of Walter Braga Netto, former Brazilian Defense Minister under the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The arrests are part of an investigation into a failed coup plot to keep Mr Bolsonaro in power after he loses re-election in 2022.
Mr. Braga Netto was formally accused in November along with Mr. Bolsonaro and 35 other individuals of plotting a coup. However, prosecutors said no criminal charges have been filed against him.
The arrest warrant was issued on December 14 because Mr. Braga Netto allegedly tried to obstruct the collection of evidence, according to police. Local media reported that he had sought information about the testimony of a former Bolsonaro aide who is currently in custody and is likely to sign a plea deal.
Along with the arrest warrant, Brazilian authorities also executed two search warrants and seized related documents.
Mr. Braga Netto served as Mr. Bolsonaro's Chief of Staff (2020 - 2021) and as Minister of Defense (2021 - 2022).
Braga Netto’s lawyer has not yet responded to the case. His legal team previously said they would wait to review the police documents before making any statement.
The arrests are part of a wide-ranging investigation by Brazilian authorities to clarify the responsibilities of parties involved in the coup plot that shocked public opinion in the country.
