The Office of the High-Level Corruption Investigation of South Korean Officials announced that it was sending forces to the residence of President Yoon Suk-yeol to execute an arrest warrant.
About 50 investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) entered the residence of President Yoon Suk-yeol in Yongsan District, Seoul, at 8:02 a.m. this morning (about 6:20 a.m. Hanoi time), minutes before the agency told the press that they had "begun to execute the arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk-yeol."
If the CIO arrests Mr. Yoon today, investigators will have 48 hours to question him and must apply for a new arrest warrant if they want to hold him longer.
A Seoul court issued an arrest warrant for Yoon on December 31, 2024, on charges of masterminding the declaration of martial law and abuse of power. The CIO is said to be trying to execute the warrant today, as it expires on January 6. If that happens, Yoon will become the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested.
CIO investigators delayed executing the arrest warrant on January 2 when thousands of President Yoon’s supporters gathered outside the palace to block them. Police had to disperse about 30 supporters after they broke through barricades outside the palace entrance.
The CIO has requested an arrest warrant and search warrant for President Yoon's residence after he ignored all three summonses for questioning.
Mr. Yoon's legal team said they did not accept the arrest warrant, which they described as "illegal and invalid," and filed an objection to the execution of the arrest warrant and the search warrant. President Yoon's security team had previously blocked investigators from raiding the Presidential Office.
Chief Intelligence Officer Oh Dong-woon on January 1 called on the President's security team to cooperate, warning that any attempt to obstruct could be deemed as shirking responsibility and obstructing the performance of official duties.
The South Korean National Assembly voted on December 14, 2024, to impeach President Yoon, suspending him from office and his powers. However, he will still hold the title of President while waiting for the Constitutional Court to make a decision. The court has 180 days to decide whether to remove or reinstate him.
President Yoon vowed to "fight to the end to protect the country" in a message to supporters opposing his impeachment.
