Should I shift from D to N while the car is running?

According to VTC News September 3, 2023 06:01

The principle of driving an automatic car is not to change gears when the engine speed is higher than the standard speed at idle.

This means that the driver can only shift between P (stop), R (reverse), N (neutral), D (forward) when the vehicle has come to a complete stop. While the vehicle is moving, the driver is not allowed to shift between the four basic gears P, R, N, D.

Shifting the gear lever to position N while the vehicle is moving is due to the driver's habit of shifting to N when driving a manual transmission, taking advantage of the vehicle's inertia to save fuel. This is not true for automatic transmissions and can be dangerous when driving and damage the transmission in the long run.

Do not shift from D to N while the vehicle is moving.

The principle of driving an automatic car is not to change gears when the engine speed is higher than the standard speed in idle mode (garangty), usually this number in most car models is 700-900 rpm. This means that you can only change gears between P, R, N, D when the car has stopped completely.

When shifting from N to D and vice versa, the hydraulic pump system of the automatic transmission will engage or disengage the gear, so continuously shifting between these two gears will reduce the life of the transmission. Even if the vehicle is stopped for a short time, you should step on the brake and keep the gear lever in position D instead of N.

The automatic transmission in the car regularly pumps oil to lubricate the parts in the transmission, when shifting to N, the transmission will automatically cut off the oil pump. If the car is running and shifts to N, the oil pump will not work while other components are still operating continuously at high intensity, this will lead to damage to the transmission.

Not to mention that the car will experience situations such as jerking or losing control because the gearbox cannot react in time to the difference between the current engine speed and the idle speed. According to the principle, when changing gears, you must always brake to ensure safety.

Shifting to N while the vehicle is running will also disable electronic safety systems, such as the ESP electronic stability control system, which will somewhat reduce the safety level when cornering and can easily lead to loss of control.

The Mazda owner's manual also clearly states: "Never drive the vehicle in neutral while it is still rolling, as the engine braking function will be ineffective and the transmission will be damaged."

Thus, it is clear that car manufacturers always recommend that drivers should not shift between N and D frequently, especially not to leave the car in N while it is still moving and vice versa.
