Dang Thuy Duong, a designer and travel blogger from Ho Chi Minh City, had a trip to experience Dien Bien in early December.
According to Thuy Duong, the 5-day, 4-night trip to Dien Bien was a sudden decision by her and her group of friends.
"During a meeting, we happened to know about a direct flight from Saigon to Dien Bien. At that time, the round-trip ticket price was 1.8 million - a very reasonable cost to try to explore a new land. Without hesitation, we booked the tickets and left a few days later," Thuy Duong said.
Previously, passengers from Ho Chi Minh City who wanted to go to Dien Bien had to fly to Hanoi and take a connecting flight from Hanoi to Dien Bien, which was time-consuming and inconvenient. However, since the beginning of December 2021, as soon as the flight route between Ho Chi Minh City and Dien Bien was put into operation, many tourists quickly booked tickets to travel and experience.
"This flight was very interesting. The flight was only over 2 hours long, but we got to "cross" the airspace of three neighboring countries: Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand," Duong said.

The ideal time to travel to Dien Bien is around January (peach blossom season), March (ban flower season) and August-September (ripe rice season). Duong's group arrived in Dien Bien in early December - a time when there are no flowers, no rice but the weather is pleasant. The weather is beautiful, the air is fresh and cool. During the day, the temperature is from 23 - 25 degrees Celsius, at night it drops about 10 degrees Celsius.
Duong said that her first goal when coming to Dien Bien was to learn about the glorious history of this place.
"During previous trips abroad, I met many foreign friends who were very interested in, and even knowledgeable about, the historic battle of Dien Bien Phu, General Vo Nguyen Giap and beloved Uncle Ho. When I arrived in Dien Bien, I visited the Dien Bien Phu museum, the A1 hill relic, and learned historical information through the tour guide's sharing. I felt admiration and pride for my ancestors. This is also the knowledge that I can confidently introduce to international friends later," Duong confided.

The Panorama painting depicts the entire Dien Bien Phu Campaign. The painting not only has historical value, is a message about the desire for peace but is also a valuable source of information, contributing to preserving and educating revolutionary traditions for future generations.
Duong also visited the Victory Monument, Muong Thanh field, Muong Lay town (more than 100 km from the city), Pa Khoang Lake, Pha Din pass... She also wanted to stop by A Pa Chai to check in at the westernmost point of the country, but due to the epidemic, there were no visitors here.
According to Thuy Duong, Dien Bien has its own unique beauty. "For the past year, due to the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, I have been confined within four walls, in the stuffiness of the city. When I arrived in Dien Bien, I felt so much appreciation and love for the wild and rustic natural landscapes here. Along the 100km road from Dien Bien to Muong Lay, I was able to admire the majestic mountains, the brilliant yellow wild sunflowers...", Duong shared.
On the first day in Dien Bien, Duong's group went up a hill to watch the sunset. She had been to many beautiful places in different countries, but rarely had a sunset as breathtakingly beautiful as Duong's. When night fell, the sky was filled with stars - something she could not see in the city.

The next day in Dien Bien, Thuy Duong's group rented motorbikes and drove from Dien Bien Phu to Muong Lay, admiring the mountains and forests of the Northwest. There were stretches of road covered in yellow wild sunflowers, so beautiful that Duong couldn't take her eyes off them.
Along the way, she stopped at a corn stall and bought four young corns for only 10,000 VND. Duong enjoyed the hot, sweet corns by the fire and then stopped by the corn field to take a few pictures.

Thuy Duong was extremely surprised when she arrived at Muong Lay, a place beautifully planned like a resort by a poetic river.
The population here is mainly White Thai. The Thai stilt houses still retain the ancient traditional tiled roof architecture.
On the way back, she stopped on Ban Xa bridge across the Da river to watch the sunset slowly fall.

Dien Bien in mid-December has a bit of a chill but still bright sunshine. The fresh air here is a plus to help your group's trip more comfortable and relaxing.
During the 5-day, 4-night journey, Thuy Duong and the group enjoyed many delicious dishes and specialties of Dien Bien such as: fatty fried worms; boiled meat with Nam Pia sauce; sticky rice, grilled chicken with Cham Cheo sauce, bon soup cooked with buffalo skin and "1001" types of nuts, vegetables, leaves; black carp rolled with forest leaves;...
“Nature has blessed Dien Bien with a wonderful climate, which is probably why the ingredients from meat, fish, and vegetables are all very fresh and delicious. This is one of the best culinary places I have ever visited,” Duong shared.
One of the things Thuy Duong really liked about Dien Bien was the warm, gentle and friendly people. Throughout the journey to visit Dien Bien, the people were warm and enthusiastic in welcoming, showing the way and supporting Duong and the group.
The friendliness and kindness of Dien Bien people left a deep impression on Thuy Duong.
At the end of the trip, Thuy Duong wrote down her feelings about Dien Bien. Duong was surprised when, right after that, she received many comments and messages from the children of Dien Bien land.
"There are uncles, aunts, and young people who thanked Duong for visiting Dien Bien and gave him good words. Everyone hopes that Duong will continue to come back here. Some of them are willing to be my tour guide to visit Dien Bien and give me traditional Thai ethnic clothes; some of them invited me to come back and catch fish in the stream," Duong emotionally shared.
The warmth of the people here makes Duong want to return. "In a beautiful flower season, I will definitely return to Dien Bien to learn more about the beauty and history of this land," Duong confided.
For Dang Thuy Duong, the journey to Dien Bien Phu was a spontaneous trip, in addition, due to the epidemic, there were many places she could not explore.
However, this was a trip that left countless beautiful memories for Duong. She met new friends, received affection from strangers she never thought she would meet, enjoyed the majestic natural beauty of the Northwest of Vietnam and experienced delicious, unique and strange dishes.
"That's more than enough for a year-end trip, closing a year of many changes," Duong said.
