The English words on the signboard to the national historical and cultural relic Long Dong Temple in Nam Tan Commune, Nam Sach District (Hai Duong) worshiping the two-nation champion Mac Dinh Chi are incorrect.
At the entrance to the temple gate there is a sign in Vietnamese with a line in English.
However, the English text above is misspelled (candidate is written as caldidate and separated) so it makes no sense. The correct word is "candidate", when combined it creates the phrase "Two nation doctoral candidate Mac Dinh Chi" which means Two nation doctoral candidate Mac Dinh Chi. However, this translation is not really good and does not convey the meaning of indicating that this location is a temple, a national historical and cultural relic.
According to a PhD in English at the University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, it should be translated as "Temple of Mac Dinh Chi, two countries'doctor of honour".
Translation into foreign languages at other relics in Hai Duong also needs more attention from professional agencies.
During the time Mac Dinh Chi (1272-1346) was an ambassador, during a court session, a foreigner presented a fan to the Yuan king. Since the Goryeo envoy was also there, the Yuan king invited Mac Dinh Chi and the Goryeo envoy to write a poem and put it on the fan. Admiring Mac Dinh Chi's literary talent, the Yuan king immediately wrote four words on the fan: "Two-country Trang Nguyen".
Long Dong Temple (Nam Tan Commune, Nam Sach) worships three famous Vietnamese scholars: Mac Hien Tich, Mac Kien Quan and Mac Dinh Chi. The temple also worships the female hero and martyr Mac Thi Buoi. Long Dong Temple was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic in 1995. In 2019, the Provincial People's Committee recognized the temple as a tourist destination.
