The family of Ms. Tran Thi Xoan, 42 years old, in Dong Tam village, Tien Dong commune, Tu Ky district (Hai Duong) is a poor household with very difficult circumstances.
Ms. Xoan lives in a house of about 30 square meters, with a tiled roof and moldy walls. The house was built temporarily on her husband’s parents’ land and is dilapidated. It is hot in the summer and leaks when it rains.
There is nothing in the house except old, broken household items and a makeshift, dilapidated kitchen.
Ms. Xoan’s husband died in 2017 at the age of 49 from esophageal cancer. She herself is suffering from lung cancer. Currently, she has no money for treatment, cannot do anything, and can only stay at home and take medicine to control her illness.
She has 2 children, 1 boy and 1 girl. Due to family circumstances, her son (21 years old) was studying at university and had to drop out to learn a trade and work part-time to support his mother and younger siblings. Her daughter is in 11th grade.
In addition to the unstable income from her son's part-time job while he is studying a trade, her two children receive a monthly subsidy of 1.1 million VND for poor households.
Besides, Ms. Xoan has no other income. She currently owes the bank 145 million VND and borrows 10 million VND from relatives.
“My husband got sick and spent a lot of money on treatment, now it’s my turn to get a serious illness. I have no money to pay off my debts, I still have to save money to buy medicine to keep him from getting sick, I have no money to treat him. I’m just worried that when my two children get seriously ill, they will be sad and have no one to rely on,” said Ms. Xoan.
Mr. Hoang Van Dien, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tien Dong Commune, said: “Ms. Tran Thi Xoan’s situation is very difficult. The Commune People’s Committee, organizations, groups, and villagers can only encourage and help her to some extent. On behalf of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the Commune, I hope that benefactors will create favorable conditions to help her have more money for medical treatment.”
Ms. Xoan does not have a bank account number.
