In Do Xa village, Ung Hoe commune, everyone felt sorry when they learned about the continuous pain of Ms. Tham's family.
Visiting Ms. Tham’s house, we saw a woman with a face older than 30 years old, her head without any hair due to radiation treatment for a terrible disease. The mother and her three children sat hugging each other on the mat, looking at her husband’s altar with absent-minded eyes.
Ms. Tham, from Nghia An commune, married Mr. Nguyen Van Thong (born in 1993), both from Ninh Giang district, in 2015. After getting married, they both applied for jobs at a company in Gia Loc district. The young couple worked hard and saved money. They have two daughters, born in 2017 and 2021. Around mid-2024, Ms. Tham became pregnant with her third child.

After receiving advice from the doctor, the couple had to terminate the pregnancy so that Tham could have the strength to treat her illness. Since September, Tham has had to go to the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion many times for treatment. Thong had to run around and borrow from everywhere to get more than 100 million VND to take care of his wife. Her husband and two young daughters are the only consolation that gives Tham the motivation to treat her illness.
Unexpectedly, a series of events continued to happen to her family.
On the evening of December 22, Ms. Tham received shocking news when her husband was on his way to work the night shift and was involved in a traffic accident. The whole family rushed to the scene to take Mr. Thong to the emergency room, but he did not survive.
“He is very hard-working and loves his three children very much. When I was sick, he ran around to take care of me so I could rest assured during treatment. But…”, Ms. Tham said sadly.
Ms. Tham cried when talking about her husband. The pain and loss were too great for someone who was seriously ill. The life of the mother and her three children is currently facing many difficulties. Carrying a debt of more than 100 million VND for cancer treatment, while her health does not allow Ms. Tham to work anymore.
Every 20 days, Ms. Tham has to go to Hanoi to be hospitalized for radiation therapy. Her grandparents help with the children's education and meals, but it is very difficult because her grandfather has an eye disease, her grandmother has a heart disease, and their economic conditions are not good.
