Islamic seminary fire in Nigeria kills 17 students

A fire broke out in a dormitory of an Islamic seminary in Kaura Namoda town, Zamfara state, northwestern Nigeria at midnight, killing 17 sleeping students and seriously burning 17 others.

On February 5, a fire broke out at an Islamic seminary in Kaura Namoda town, Zamfara state, northwestern Nigeria, killing at least 17 students.

Local officials said the fire ripped through the dormitory in the middle of the night, killing 17 sleeping students and leaving 17 others with severe burns. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

About 100 students aged between 10 and 16 were sleeping when the fire broke out, said Aliyu Abubakar Khalifa, the seminary's principal.

The fire was initially extinguished and students went back to bed, but the fire flared up again around 2am.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu immediately sent his condolences and prayed for the injured victims to recover soon.
