What should I do first when checking into a hotel?

Many travelers will look for hidden cameras as soon as they check into a hotel, while others will flip mattresses over to look for bed bugs or check the bathroom.

On Reddit, a famous forum in the US with more than 70 million visits per day, a newly posted topic has attracted the attention of many people: "What is the first thing you do when you enter a hotel room?".

Travelers around the world responded enthusiastically, leaving hundreds of comments. One of the most popular answers was “check your bedding for bed bugs.” One person added that a roommate had brought bed bugs home from a trip, which was “horrible.” “Wear disposable gloves and check the mattress and underneath for bed bugs,” another suggested.

Other travelers say they regularly check the restrooms, as well as taking the time to wipe down TV remotes, doorknobs, light switches and toilet seats with disposable antibacterial wipes.

One user named Parlay shared that he "always checks the water pressure of the shower first" and said that this determines whether he stays at that hotel or not.

Other answers include: putting your suitcase on the luggage rack, turning off the alarm, finding a charging socket and looking out the window, taking a shower, unpacking and hanging clothes in the closet, double-checking the room lock and the minibar for anything inside, or looking around for hidden cameras.

Many people share that they will adjust the air conditioner because the air in the room is often too cold when they first enter or lie on their stomachs in bed for a while to rest.

An anonymous flight attendant with more than 20 years of flying experience said the first thing she does after checking in is to check whether the sheets are wrinkled or smooth. If the sheets are not smooth, your room may have been overlooked or not cleaned properly by the cleaning staff.

Harrison Jacobs, a frequent traveler who stays in hotels 300 nights a year, looks inside the kettle in his room. If he sees mold or rust, he knows the housekeeper has neglected to clean it. This indicates poor housekeeping. He will ask for a change of room or shorten his stay at such hotels.

Hotel staff say they want guests to take a tour of their room after check-in to check for anything that is broken or needs adjustment and report it to the front desk. "The sooner a guest reports a problem, the sooner it will be fixed." Staff also discourage guests from complaining until they check out or the next day. In fact, many guests will have to pay for a broken item in their room if they don't report it at check-in.
