The medals for the Paris 2024 Olympics are not only inspired by the Eiffel Tower, but also contain an original part of the famous landmark.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games Organizing Committee said that a steel frame removed from the Eiffel Tower during a previous renovation was reused to create the hexagonal centerpiece of the medals in the designs officially unveiled on February 8. The Eiffel Tower's signature dark brown paint was cleaned and the pieces were cut into hexagons before being embossed with the Paris 2024 Olympic logo.
Organizers say that with this design, athletes who win competitions at this year's Olympics will be able to take home “real pieces of Parisian history.”
The design of the Paris 2024 Olympic medals was overseen by renowned French jeweler Chaumet. Chaumet's creative director Clémentine Massonnat-Schaller told CNN that the design was intended to feature a hexagonal centerpiece resembling a gemstone, with the Eiffel Tower serving as a key inspiration.
In July 2023, the Organizing Committee announced that the Olympic torch would be used for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time in the Games’ history. With a ripple effect designed to evoke moving water, the 1.5 kg torch designed by French designer Mathieu Lehanneur will be made entirely from recycled steel.
