EU countries reach agreement to share responsibility for receiving refugees

On October 4, Spain, the country holding the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), said EU member states had reached an agreement on the issue of migrants and refugees.

The discussion on October 4 revolved around a revised text of the agreement on a refugee sharing mechanism proposed by Spain.

The deal on a migrant sharing mechanism proposed by Spain is called the EU's new Migration and Asylum Pact.

The deal would ease the burden on frontline countries like Italy and Greece by transferring some refugees to other EU countries.
