The documentary about former soccer star David Beckham has created a global fever on Netflix, attracting the attention of audiences around the world.
Premiering on October 4, the Beckham series has dominated Netflix’s streaming charts in 53 countries, reaching the top spot globally in the long-form series category and receiving perfect scores on film sites. The series quickly took the top spot on Netflix’s English-language TV shows chart with a total of 12.4 million views (as of October 8).
The documentary tells the story of David Beckham's love for football and his wife Victoria, while revealing the "secret" stories throughout the famous couple's career and family life.
According to Social Blade, after only 3 days, the film has brought a positive effect to the Beckham brand, helping the former player gain 500,000 more followers. This proves that after more than three decades, David Beckham is still the most attractive name in the world, not only to football fans but even to those who are not familiar with this king sport.
Beckham is not limited to the main character's self-narration. Throughout the 4 episodes, director Fisher Stevens tried to connect the audience with Victoria, David's parents, his best friend, his former coach, his former teammates at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and even those who were his opponents or disliked him to gain a more multi-dimensional perspective of him. The film makes the audience realize that David Beckham's success did not come easily or smoothly.
Meanwhile, Lupin season 3 is back and has immediately taken the top spot on Netflix’s non-English language TV show chart. The French-language series has already garnered 11.6 million views since its October 5 release. Seasons 1 and 2 of the series have also returned to the chart, coming in at number two and number four, respectively.
This shows the great appeal of Lupin and the audience's interest in this series. Inspired by the adventures of Arsene Lupin, the film revolves around the gentleman thief Assane Diop (played by Omar Sy) who sets out to avenge his father for the injustice caused by a wealthy family.
Other notable spots on Netflix include the love drama Love is Blind season 5, which continues to hold the third spot on the English-language shows chart, and the One Piece series, which rose to fourth place after last week's success.
