Thailand's oldest political party, the Democrat Party, said it would abstain when the Thai parliament votes to elect a prime minister on July 13.

Voting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. local time this morning.

Speaking to reporters on July 12, Sunutcha Losathapornpipit, a member of the Democrat Party, said the party has a clear stance that it will not support a candidate from a political party that seeks to amend Section 112 of the Penal Code, also known as the lese majeste law.

Ms. Sunutcha asserted that her decision to abstain rather than vote against was in line with Democratic Party principles.

She also said the decision was made at a meeting of 25 Democratic Party lawmakers and was unrelated to discussions with the government's previous coalition parties.

In the general election on May 14, the Democratic Party won only 25 seats in the House of Representatives, down 28 seats compared to the 2019 election.

Democrat Party leader Jurin Laksanawisit, Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister of the outgoing government, has resigned as party leader to take responsibility for the poor election results.
