The British government has confirmed that it will not take back asylum seekers who have been in the country but then moved to Ireland.

London also believes that the European Union (EU) is applying double standards on the issue of migrants when Ireland announced that it would send asylum seekers back to the UK, while another EU member, France, refused to accept migrants crossing the English Channel.

The Guardian newspaper on April 29 quoted a British government source as saying that the UK will not take back any asylum seekers from the EU via Ireland until the EU agrees that the UK can send asylum seekers back to France. The UK is focusing on implementing the Rwanda plan and will continue to cooperate with France to prevent migrants from crossing the English Channel to the UK.

London's response came after the Irish government announced on April 28 that it would consider introducing emergency legislation to return refugees to the UK. Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee was scheduled to meet British Home Secretary James Cleverly on April 29 to discuss immigration, but Cleverly cancelled the meeting due to "schedule conflicts".

From 29 April, the UK Home Office will begin detaining asylum seekers for deportation to Rwanda, with the first flights expected to take off in the coming weeks.

London's new move comes as the number of people crossing the English Channel by boat continues to rise to record highs.

According to the UK Home Office, about 359 people arrived in the country on April 27, bringing the total number of migrants since the beginning of the year to 7,167, up 25% compared to the same period last year (5,745 people) and up 7% compared to the number in 2022 (6,691 people).

Under the Safe Rwanda Act, signed into law on 25 April, asylum seekers who enter the UK illegally after 1 January 2022 will be deported to Rwanda and can apply for asylum there if they do not want to return home.
