The Home Office estimates that the extension will affect more than 283,000 Ukrainians currently in the UK. Immigration Minister Tom Pursglove said the visa extension would provide greater certainty and reassurance for Ukrainians. He also pledged to continue to provide safe havens for Ukrainian refugees in the future.

The UK currently operates two schemes for Ukrainian refugees. One is for people with family already in the UK and the other allows British people to provide accommodation to Ukrainian refugees affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The UK government estimates that from the beginning of 2025, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees will be able to apply to remain in the UK and retain access to the UK job market as well as the health care and education systems.

Britain has been one of the most active countries in supporting Ukraine. Along with its own programs, it is also urging US lawmakers to vote on a $95 billion security aid package for Ukraine and other allied countries, and has said it will provide thousands of drones to Kiev.
