Even if you are a professional chef, small mistakes can make cooking difficult.
Here are some mistakes you might make before you start cooking.
Dishwasher, sink not cleaned
There's nothing worse than setting out to cook and then realizing the dishwasher or sink is full and needs to be emptied, according to chef Calvin Eng, owner of Bonnie's in Brooklyn, New York.
It is important before you start cooking to make suresureeverything in the kitchen is clean and ready to use. You can't prepare a good meal if your knives, cutting boards, and other necessary utensils are still dirty in the sink or in the machine.
To blunt knives and scissors
Sharp knives and scissors are very important in cooking. Moreover, using a dull knife can affect safety and cause accidents for the user. Therefore, you should sharpen your knives and scissors before cooking. On average, you should sharpen your knives and scissors once a month.
No small trash can prepared
Instead of constantly having to open the kitchen cabinet to throw away trash and causing the risk of cross-contamination, you can use a small, clean trash can right next to the food preparation area, allowing you to conveniently throw away trash. When the preparation is complete, you can collect the small trash can into the large trash can, instead of having to repeatedly turn around and throw trash in the large bin.
No cutting boards available
Cutting boards are essential in food preparation, both raw and cooked. Therefore, you will need to prepare all the necessary cutting boards. Remember to place a damp towel underneath before using to keep the cutting board stable and prevent slipping, causing accidents. You can also spread newspaper or a dry towel underneath the cutting board to prevent food from splashing everywhere.
Put leftovers in the freezer without labeling
Normally, you take things out of the freezer to cook. If you don't finish cooking all the food, you tend to put it back in the refrigerator. However, not putting it in a freezer, not labeling it with the date, name of the food... can cause it to be forgotten, leading to it expiring. According to chef Calvin Eng, you should label and date all the food in the refrigerator according to the FIFO method (first in, first out). That way, you know exactly what you have in the freezer and proactively use the food accordingly.
