17 artisan teams attend Chung and Day Cake Contest

This is one of special contents that have been maintained at the Con Son – Kiep Bac Spring Festival for years.

The Organizing Board of the 2019 Con Son – Kiep Bac Spring Festival held the 10th Chung and Day (Square and Round Glutinous Rice) Cake Contest on the morning of February 18 (the 14th day of the 1st lunar month) in the stone yard of Con Son pagoda.

This is one of special contents that have been maintained at the Con Son – Kiep Bac Spring Festival for years.



Teams make chung cakes in urging drumbeats and cheers of the audience


11 artisan teams from districts, Chi Linh provincial town, and Hai Duong city (exclusive of Thanh Ha district) took part in the chung cake competition and six teams, consisting of Tu Ky, Kinh Mon, Nam Sach, and Thanh Ha districts, Chi Linh provincial town, and Hai Duong city, joined in the day cake competition.

In the chung cake competition, each team prepared 6.8 kg of rice, 1.5 kg of peeled green beans, 0.8 kg of pork, pepper, salted onions, and seasoning.



Grading chung cakes before boiling


Each team had no more than 15 minutes to make five meaty and five vegetarian cakes. The cakes were boiled in six hours.

The day cake competition lasted 50 minutes. Each team of six cooked and pound rice to make five day cakes.

The organizers based themselves on such criteria as quantity, cake making time, quality, etc. to give marks.

The offering of the chung and day cakes to Buddha and saints, contest summarization, and prize awarding are taking place this morning (February 19 - the 15th day of the 1st lunar month).
