Two sisters, Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong, the owners of a jewelry store, and their accomplices were tried for smuggling 6 tons of gold (worth 8,500 billion VND) hidden under a tricycle carrying ice.
On July 16, Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong (39 years old, owner of Kim Oanh Hang gold shop in Tay Ninh); Nguyen Thi Ngoc Giau (44 years old, Phuong's sister); Nguyen Thi Minh Phung (43 years old, from Binh Dinh) and 21 accomplices were tried by the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City for the crime ofSmuggle.
In connection with the case, Dang Thi Thanh Hang (owner of Phuc Hang gold shop in Hanoi and Hat Giang in Ho Chi Minh City) has fled and is being wanted by the Ministry of Public Security.
Minh Phung used to work as a gold shop employee and currency exchanger, so she knows many people in the field in Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh and Cambodia.
The indictment determined that in early 2022, Phung and Phuong saw that the domestic gold price was higher than in Cambodia, so they colluded with Giau - living near the Chang Riec border gate, Tay Ninh, and many others to set up two transport routes to Vietnam to sell for profit.
The route of 6 tons of smuggled gold
Phung led the first ring. After understanding the needs of domestic customers, the defendant and Giau contacted jewelry stores at the Olympic Market in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) to place orders. Phung assigned Giau to organize the transfer of money, payment for the purchase of gold bars from Tay Ninh to Cambodia and transport them to Vietnam.
Accordingly, after buying the gold, Giau's group hid it in a secret compartment under the ice-carrying tricycle to take it through the Chang Riec border gate. When they arrived at the ice factory in Tan Lap commune, Tan Bien district (owned by Giau and his son Tran Thanh Thang, 22 years old), Giau divided the gold into small pieces and assigned many people to take it to Ho Chi Minh City for Phung.
Using this method, from August 3, 2022 to September 28, 2022, Phung smuggled 4,830 kg of gold bars (worth VND 6,644 billion), resold to Huynh Minh Khanh (Khanh Kim Loan gold shop) 560 kg; Nguyen Thi Minh (Kim Hien Binh Minh gold shop) 268 kg; Dang Thi Thanh Hang (wanted) 294 kg; 36 other customers 1,828 kg; sold to retail customers (unknown origin) 1,804 kg. The remaining 76 kg were seized by the investigation agency.
Authorities determined that this ring illegally profited 17.6 billion VND. Of which, Phung received 2.4 billion VND, Giau 13.8 billion VND, and the remaining 20 defendants were divided according to their efforts.
The second line was led by Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong. To have smuggled gold to supply to Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, Phuong contributed capital with Pich Hen (Cambodian) to buy it, then through her sister Ngoc Giau and Thang brought it through the Chang Riec border gate in the same way as transporting it to Phung.
Authorities allege that in about 2 months (July-September 2022), Phuong's ring smuggled 1,320 kg of gold bars, worth more than VND1,800 billion. Phuong profited 132,000 USD (more than VND3 billion), Giau profited more than VND3.7 billion and a number of other defendants profited depending on the level of their participation in the smuggling.
In total, the two lines successfully transported more than 6 tons of gold into Vietnam. Each gold bar before being sold would have its symbol removed (hiding its foreign origin). After deducting the wages of the participants, Phung made a profit of 500,000 VND.
The prosecution determined that Phung and Phuong were the masterminds, organizers, and leaders of the network, while Giau was an active supporter and participant in both networks run by Phung and his sister.
Regarding the case of over 6 tons of smuggled gold entering Vietnam, the authorities continue to clarify the actions related to a number of other individuals and units. In particular, regarding the violations of 9 individuals from the Chang Riec Border Guard Station, the Investigation Police Agency of the Ministry of Public Security transferred the case to the Ministry of National Defense for handling.
The trial is chaired by Judge Nguyen Thi Ha - Deputy Chief Justice of the Criminal Court; expected to last until July 18.
