On the morning of October 12, the Hanoi People's Court opened the first-instance trial of three former police officers of Dai Nghia town (My Duc, Hanoi) who "shot the wrong goat" for theft of property.
3 former police officers shot and stole goats from people
The defendants include Nguyen Van Nhan, a former Captain; Bui Dinh Viet and Bui Tien Tung, also former First Lieutenants. All three were accused of shooting dead a local goat in late June.
The court also summoned the victim, who lost the goat, and several witnesses, but they were all absent. The representative of the Procuracy said that although the victim and witnesses had presented their statements during the investigation phase, because the defendants had only "confessed to a certain level of crime", they needed to summon all of them to clarify the details of the case.
After consultation, the Trial Panel decided that this was the first time the court opened but there were no victims or witnesses, so the trial needed to be postponed to summon everyone present to ensure the rights of all parties.
The content of the case shows that at noon on June 26, the defendants Nguyen Van Nhan, Bui Dinh Viet and Bui Tien Tung drove a car, carrying an air gun into the Mao Ga mountain area, Ai Nang village, An Phu commune, My Duc district to shoot birds.
These people then shot dead two goats because they thought they were mountain goats. When the locals discovered the incident, they stopped the three people and the car to request the authorities to come and resolve the matter.
The Hanoi Police Investigation Agency has decided to prosecute the case and detain all three defendants. The Hanoi Police Director also decided to strip the title of People's Police of these three officers.
The families of the three defendants later met with the person whose goat was shot dead to apologize and pay 20 million VND in compensation.
