Delicious sticky rice granary 415 in Binh Giang has a good harvest and good price

Nearly ten years ago, farmers in Long Xuyen commune introduced the 415 glutinous rice variety into production. Taking us to visit the 415 glutinous rice fields full of flowers, Mr. Hoang Huu Bac, Director of the Long Xuyen Agricultural Service Cooperative, said that in the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, the commune has 260 hectares of rice, of which 60% is 415 glutinous rice. This is a rice variety with many advantages such as few pests and diseases, high yield, and stable selling price. This crop, the cooperative has built 5 high-quality rice areas with a scale of 5 hectares/area. Of which, 4 areas are planted with 415 glutinous rice. The cooperative has focused on directing the zoning of commercial rice production, synchronously applying scientific and technical advances and farming measures to production. According to Mr. Bac, this crop, the yield of 415 glutinous rice reached 2.4-2.5 quintals/sao.

With about ten years of cultivating 415 sticky rice, farmers in Thai Duong commune have gained a lot of experience. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Sang, Director of Thai Duong Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative, this crop, the whole commune has about 197 hectares of 415 sticky rice, accounting for about 50% of the rice growing area. The average yield is about 2.4 quintals/sao. The fields that apply the method of cultivating rice seedlings by machine can have a yield 10-20 kg/sao higher than that of planting by hand.

Ms. Le Thi Bay in Thai Duong commune shared: "This crop, I planted 5 sao of 415 sticky rice and have harvested it. We also often sell fresh rice to traders in the field. Therefore, we do not have to spend time and effort drying and preserving, but we can rest assured about the output."

Building rice production areas

Glutinous rice variety 415 was recognized as a national variety in 1987, and can be grown in two crops a year. The early season crop has a growing period of 110-115 days and the winter-spring crop 145 days. This rice variety has some advantages such as good tillering ability, sticky rice has a characteristic aroma and is sticky.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Giang district, 415 sticky rice has been widely cultivated by farmers in the district for about 10 years now. Farmers cultivate 415 sticky rice in both crops, of which the winter-spring crop ranges from 2,000-2,500 hectares, the summer-autumn crop ranges from 2,500-3,000 hectares, accounting for 50-60% of the total cultivated area. Communes with large areas of 415 sticky rice cultivation include: Thai Duong, Long Xuyen, Thuc Khang...

However, this rice variety has the disadvantage of poor lodging resistance and is susceptible to rice blast disease in the winter-spring crop. To overcome this situation, Binh Giang district has applied the method of transplanting rice seedlings in trays by machine. The area of ​​415 rice transplanted by machine in the district is from 800-1,000 ha/crop. 415 glutinous rice transplanted by machine has increased lodging resistance and is less susceptible to pests and diseases, increasing productivity compared to manual transplanting.

In the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, Binh Giang will build two large commodity rice production areas, namely Bac Thom No. 7 rice area and 415 sticky rice area, Hung Yen sticky rice. Rice consumption is favorable in both price and market. Binh Giang farmers often sell fresh rice right in the field without having to spend time drying and preserving. Farmers are selling 415 sticky rice in the field for 8,800-9,000 VND/kg, sometimes up to 9,500 VND/kg. This price is 500-1,800 VND/kg higher than other rice varieties in the district. Not only does it provide fresh rice purchasing services for farmers in the fields, many households in the communes have invested in building rice drying kilns with a capacity of 15-30 tons/kiln in Thai Hoa, Long Xuyen, Thai Duong... Binh Giang's rice consumption market is favorable due to the presence of many large-scale drying kilns, and a strong rice milling network in many communes and towns, which has created favorable conditions for promoting the rice purchasing process for farmers. The construction of large-scale commercial rice production models with guaranteed product consumption for farmers has helped increase economic value per unit of cultivated area.

According to Mr. Vu Van Luyen, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Giang district, each sao of 415 sticky rice brings in revenue of 2-2.5 million VND, profit of 1-1.5 million VND. This is a high profit compared to other rice varieties in the district.
