The Vietnam National Opera and Ballet will present the original Russian version of the ballet "Swan Lake" choreographed by Meritorious Artist Luu Thu Lan.
The classic ballet “Swan Lake” in its original Russian version will be performed at the Hanoi Opera House from June 14 to 16.
This work premiered in Vietnam in 1985, directed by Russian experts. In 2019, the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet introduced “Swan Lake” directed by General Director-People’s Artist Tran Ly Ly and choreographer Le Ngoc Van.
After 5 years, the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet decided to bring this world masterpiece back to the Vietnamese stage with the original Russian version performed by domestic artists.
According to Meritorious Artist Phan Manh Duc, Director of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, bringing this ballet masterpiece back is to satisfy the audience's desire to enjoy top-notch art.
“In 'Swan Lake,' good and evil always go together, existing like the human ego. It is like the struggle that always exists in social life. Only love and noble ideals are the gates that lead people to overcome adversity, to eternal love. For that reason, this work is always welcomed by audiences no matter where and in what circumstances,” said Mr. Phan Manh Duc.
Choreographer-Meritorious Artist Luu Thu Lan said the graceful, technical, dramatic dances of classical ballet are well suited to the simple yet engaging storytelling in “Swan Lake.”
“Until now, no ballet has surpassed 'Swan Lake' in terms of influence, artistry and the monumentality of the dance through Tchaikovsky's music and Petipa and Ivanov's choreography. That's why I decided to stage it according to the original, even though it was a big challenge for myself and the crew,” choreographer Luu Thu Lan shared.
With this comeback, “Swan Lake” will feature famous stars such as Meritorious Artist Pham Thu Hang, dancer Duc Hieu, “Ballet Prince” Meritorious Artist Van Nam… along with young artists such as Lan Nhi, Lan Chi, Khanh Bang, Tuan Anh… and a collective dance group from the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Dance Department, Vietnam Dance Academy, Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema.
The Symphony Orchestra of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet with more than 60 musicians under the command of conductor Dong Quang Vinh will bring to the audience the most wonderful melodies of the famous composer PI Tchaikovsky.
“Swan Lake” tells the love story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette. Due to the magic of the wizard Rothbart, Odette is transformed into a swan during the day and only returns to human form at night.
Rothbart's curse will disappear if Odette meets someone who loves and is faithful to her. Siegfried and Odette's love has gone through many tragedies, tested by black magic, including the presence of Odile - the daughter of the witch Rothbart.
Odile the Black Swan seduces Siegfried and makes him believe that she is the Swan Princess. When Siegfried realizes the deception, he immediately returns to Odette. Rothbart is furious and a battle between good and evil ensues.
