Vietnam's Thai Hai ethnic ecological stilt house village conservation area is among the 32 best tourist villages in 2022 announced by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has just announced a list of 32 destinations worldwide as “Best Tourist Villages of 2022”. Included in this list is the Thai Hai Ethnic Ecological Stilt House Village Conservation Area of Vietnam.
Thai Hai stilt house village (Thinh Duc, Thai Nguyen city) has an area of about 25 hectares, surrounded by mountains, hills, grass, flowers, and a large lake. There are 30 stilt houses here that are hundreds of years old, bought from Dinh Hoa area (Thai Nguyen), transported and restored to become the current home to 30 families with 4 generations.
These families together maintain and preserve traditional cultural features such as language, customs, rituals, and costumes. They promote local cultural potential to form unique tourism products such as organizing traditional spiritual festivals or selecting people with relatively stable cultural knowledge and language skills to work as tour guides.

Tourists visiting Thai Hai village will stay in stilt houses with local people so that they can learn about the cuisine, culture, agricultural activities, animal husbandry and handicrafts of the Tay ethnic group.
In 2022, a total of 136 villages were nominated for the award by 57 UNWTO member states. Of these, 32 villages from 18 countries around the world were recognized and awarded. The tourism villages were evaluated by an independent Advisory Board based on a set of criteria on: cultural and natural resources; resources for cultural conservation and promotion; economic, social and environmental sustainability; tourism development and value chain linkages; tourism governance and priorities; infrastructure and connectivity; health, safety and security.

“For rural communities everywhere, tourism can be a life-changing event, creating jobs, supporting local businesses and preserving traditions,” said Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO Secretary-General.
In addition to the 32 villages that have already been recognised and awarded, 20 others have been included in the UNWTO upgrading programme, which supports those that have yet to meet the criteria for accreditation. All 52 villages will form part of the UNWTO Global Network of Best Tourism Villages (launched in 2021, which now includes 115 villages from five continents). The network offers a number of benefits including on-site and online training, experience sharing, and increased international brand awareness and recognition.
The awards ceremony will take place in Saudi Arabia on February 27 and 28, 2023.
