UNESCO will send experts to Vietnam to assess conservation risks to Ha Long Bay due to concerns that surrounding tourism development projects will affect the destination.
The information was shared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the British news agency Reuters on December 20. UNESCO expressed concern about new tourism development projects and urban areas along the coast of Ha Long City. UNESCO said that these projects "have not been properly assessed for their impacts".
Experts from UNESCO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature will conduct an assessment in the coming months. If threats to the integrity of the heritage and the criteria for Ha Long Bay to be listed are found, UNESCO will ask the local authorities to take remedial measures and strengthen the protection of the destination.
Ha Long Bay is located in Quang Ninh province, covering an area of over 1,500 km2 with nearly 2,000 large and small islands. Ha Long Bay was recognized as a World Natural Heritage in 1994 based on the criteria of landscape beauty. The bay was recognized for the second time based on the criteria of geological value in 2000. The bay attracts millions of tourists every year.
