The number of new majors opened by autonomous universities has skyrocketed in recent years. It is worth noting that there are quite a few majors that were opened one year and then closed the following year.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, in less than 3 years since 2021, 639 new university-level majors have been opened by autonomous higher education institutions.

During the same period, the number of new majors assigned to schools by the Ministry of Education and Training was 126.

It can be seen that the number of new majors opened by autonomous schools has increased sharply in the past few years.

Of which, in 2021, the number of new majors opened by autonomous universities increased the most with 262 majors, followed by 201 majors in 2022 and in the first 8 months of 2023, there were 176 majors.

On the other hand, the number of new majors assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training to universities has gradually decreased. In 2021, there were 56 majors, in 2022, there were 40 majors, and in the first 8 months of 2023, there were 28 majors.

Regarding the autonomy in opening majors, many schools open new majors in large numbers in a short time. According to the 2023 enrollment plan of the University of Mining and Geology, the school enrolls 41 training majors.

Notably, nearly 50% of the majors opened by the school autonomously will be in 2021 and 2022. In just these two years, the school opened 20 new majors. Of which, in 2021, the school opened 8 new majors and in 2022, it opened 12 new majors. Thus, in just 2 years, the number of new majors has accounted for 49% of the school's total number of majors.

In the previous period, when the opening of majors was still subject to appraisal and licensing by the Ministry of Education and Training, the number of new majors opened by the school was quite small.

When the school started enrolling students in 1966, it had 12 majors. During the next 35 years, the school did not open any new majors. In 2002, the school opened a new major in information technology. Nine years later, in 2011, it opened 4 more majors.

In 2015, the school opened a new major, and in 2018, it opened two more majors. Thus, in 2022 alone, the number of new majors the school opened was more than the number of majors the school opened in the previous 50 years (from 1967 to 2020).

Another university that also has a large number of new majors opened by the autonomous school is the University of Water Resources. In just two years 2021 and 2022, the autonomous school opened 13 new majors. Of which 7 majors were opened in 2021 and 6 majors in 2022.

At the National Economics University, the number of newly opened autonomous majors in recent years is quite large.

In 2018 alone, the school autonomously opened 10 new majors. In 2020 and 2021, the school only opened 2 new majors. In 2024, the National Economics University announced a project to open 7 new majors, of which 5 are in the information technology sector.

In the Southern region, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics has also seen a rapid increase in the number of new majors in recent years. From 2018 to now, the autonomous school has opened 22 new majors. The new majors are concentrated in the years 2021-2023. In 2023 alone, the autonomous school opened 5 new majors.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City Banking University also opened 6 new majors, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology opened 7 new majors.

Not counting the 7 new majors opened this year, by 2023, 22/66 majors of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology will be opened autonomously by the school. Of which, 11 new majors will be opened in 2022 alone, and 7 new majors will be opened in 2021.

In 2022 and 2023, Thu Dau Mot University temporarily suspends enrollment in 13 majors.

Besides the rush to open new majors, many universities also rushed to close a series of majors that had only been opened one or two years ago.

Notable among these is Thu Dau Mot University. This school opens majors very quickly and closes majors just as quickly.

As of 2023, the school has 37 undergraduate training majors. However, 2 majors were closed in 2023, 11 majors were closed in 2022. Therefore, in reality, the school still enrolls 24 majors. In 2020 alone, the school autonomously opened 8 new majors.

In just 3 years from 2019 to 2021, this school opened 14 new majors. Among the 13 majors that closed in 2022 and 2023, there are some majors that the school has recently opened autonomously, such as economic mathematics, cultural management, public management, quality assurance and food safety, etc.

In particular, the public management major was only opened in 2022 but this major did not recruit any candidates and by 2023 the school decided to close the major.

Similarly, in 2021, Hoa Sen University autonomously opened 10 new training majors. In 2020, the school autonomously opened 5 new majors. Notably, some majors, although only opened in these two years, have temporarily stopped enrolling in 2023, such as economic law, real estate, Japanese studies, American studies, and film.

Hong Bang International University also temporarily suspended enrollment in 7 majors: physical education, fashion design, industrial management, construction engineering, Chinese studies, Korean studies, and Japanese studies.
