A joint assessment by South Korea and the US showed that "it is possible that the launch will take place this week due to ongoing maintenance of facilities" at the new launch site in Tongchang-ri, northwestern North Korea.
Yonhap news agency quoted a South Korean government source as saying that North Korea appears to have completed preparations to launch a second reconnaissance satellite.
According to a report released on April 14, a joint assessment by South Korea and the United States showed that "the launch is likely to take place this week due to ongoing maintenance of facilities" at the new launch site in Tongchang-ri, northwest North Korea.
The launch could coincide with a major North Korean political event scheduled for this month.
Last week, South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik said the satellite launch was expected to take place in mid-April if technical preparations were completed, adding that North Korea could attempt to launch a satellite on April 15, the birthday of late President Kim Il-sung, grandfather of current leader Kim Jong-un.
North Korea launched its first reconnaissance satellite in November 2023 and has since revealed plans to launch three more this year.
