Safe Motherhood Week 2023 with the theme: "Safe Motherhood - Health for mothers, future for babies," will take place from October 1-7, 2023 in 51 provinces under the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period.

To effectively implement this week, the Department of Maternal and Child Health (Ministry of Health) has just issued an official dispatch to guide localities and related units.

According to the Department of Maternal and Child Health, safe motherhood is one of the important contents of reproductive health care. The goal of the Program is to improve the quality of health care for mothers and newborns, reduce the rate of obstetric complications, reduce maternal and newborn mortality. Therefore, health education contents on safe motherhood have been of interest to the World Health Organization (WHO) and many countries, becoming an important content of the Global Maternal and Child Health Care Strategy...

In order to raise awareness among people, especially those in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, the Ministry of Health guides the implementation of "Safe Motherhood Week" within the framework of Project 7 - Taking care of people's health, improving the physical condition and stature of ethnic minorities; preventing malnutrition under the National Target Program on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

The program's goal is to promote communication activities on safe motherhood, focusing on raising awareness and changing people's behavior in the community about maternal, newborn and child health care in disadvantaged areas, contributing to reducing the differences in health, nutrition, maternal and child mortality indicators between regions, towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

During this year's "Safe Motherhood Week", each commune health station in ethnic minority and mountainous areas organized at least one communication activity on Safe Motherhood; Provided information on Safe Motherhood to 100% of pregnant and postpartum women present in the locality; Mobilized, provided information, and created favorable conditions for mass media agencies, especially propaganda agencies at district and commune levels, to have news and articles on safe motherhood.
