British Prime Minister admits defeat in parliamentary election, confirms resignation

On July 5, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak admitted defeat in the parliamentary election, saying the opposition Labor Party had won.

Mr Sunak called Labour leader Keir Starmer to congratulate him.

Mr. Sunak also confirmed that he will resign as British Prime Minister.

According to the vote count in 474 constituencies, the Labor Party won 331 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons.

Under the British constitution, the leader of the party that wins the general election becomes prime minister and forms a new government. Mr Sunak's Conservative Party is expected to win the fewest seats in history.

European Council President Charles Michel on July 5 congratulated Keir Starmer on his election victory in the UK, and said he looked forward to working in the new government in the UK.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also sent her congratulations to Mr Starmer on social media X. Ms Metsola stressed that the UK and the EU are allies and partners, so "close cooperation between the two sides is in the common interest".

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who is expected to become the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, congratulated the British Labour leader, stressing "Britain's commitment to common security".

On the same day, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese congratulated British Prime Minister-elect Keir Starmer and expressed his desire to work constructively with the incoming British Government.
