Simple habits to help you fall asleep faster

According to experts, opening the windows slightly at night can help people fall asleep faster.

Insomnia at night comes from many reasons, such as stress, anxiety, too hot weather, lack of air in the bedroom, and discomfort. This makes people feel frustrated, tired and exhausted the next morning.

Sammy Margo, Sleep Expert at Dreams, reveals that keeping your windows cracked open at night is beneficial for sleep. This habit also has other surprising benefits.

Opening the windows allows cool air to flow into the house, helping people fall asleep faster. Citing research published in 2021, Dr. Margo said that heat exposure increases alertness and reduces the amount of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep people spend in. This is the stage of sleep associated with vivid dreams due to increased brain activity.

"So the hotter the room, the harder it is to fall asleep. Breathing in cool, fresh air can help improve this. Cool air entering the room also helps cool the body throughout the night - essential for a good night's sleep," explains Dr. Margo.

According to her, the optimal temperature in the bedroom is 16-18 degrees Celsius. Fresh air also helps people sleep faster and deeper.

The National Sleep Foundation also points out the relationship between fresh air and feelings of restfulness. Air provides a cooling effect, allowing the body to relax and breathing to stabilize. Opening the windows at night also helps reduce the build-up of emissions from pets, dust mites and CO2. High CO2 levels increase the likelihood of waking during the night, reducing sleep quality.

According to Dr. Margo, the gases people breathe at night naturally accumulate. If the bedroom is not properly ventilated, this gas can cause health problems such as headaches, nausea and dizziness.

Families should also arrange windows reasonably to have a more comfortable space. For bedrooms, windows should not be placed at the head of the bed or facing the person lying down, nor should windows be placed in a position that receives sunlight from the west, which will affect sleep and health.
