According to the book Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi, Tran Ich Phat lived during the Le So Dynasty (15th-16th century), coming from a poor farming family in Trieu Duong village, Chi Linh district (now Chi Linh city, Hai Duong province).

From a young age, he showed outstanding intelligence and a phenomenal memory. He could memorize complex scriptures after just one reading. Tran Ich Phat's reputation quickly spread far and wide.

In 1448, under the reign of King Le Nhan Tong, he participated in the regional examination and passed with excellence, achieving the title of Giai Nguyen. However, when entering the national examination, Tran Ich Phat failed, causing many people to regret.

Although he was very young, instead of waiting for the next exam or becoming an official, he chose another path.

At that time, Tran Ich Phat told himself: "If I can't become a doctor, I will train doctors, even if they are third-class, second-class, or top-ranked."

That determination urged him to return to his hometown and open a school. His reputation spread far and wide, and more and more students from all over came to study with Tran Ich Phat.

According to the book Teachers in Vietnamese History, Tran Ich Phat's approach was far different from the educational tradition of that time. He paid deep attention to the psychological characteristics of each student, encouraging each person in their own way to promote learning efficiency.

Tran Ich Phat's efforts brought great results. Through the examinations from 1463 to 1496, the court had 9 more top students, 10 second-ranked students, and 10 third-ranked students.

Tran Ich Phat's students alone had 3 first-class laureates, 4 second-class laureates, and 6 third-class laureates. In addition, there were 10 royal laureates and 51 doctors. This was considered a miracle, because in ancient times, just training one student to pass a major exam was enough to make one famous in the world.

Most of Tran Ich Phat's students passed the imperial examinations during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong. This was also the period when education and examinations were extremely developed.

When King Le Thanh Tong was still a prince wandering among the people, he heard of and admired Tran Ich Phat's talent. Later, thanks to his contribution in training many talented people for the court, Tran Ich Phat was appointed by the king as Dong Cac Dai Hoc Si, a rare honor for someone who had just passed the provincial examination.

Despite being favored by the king, Tran Ich Phat still refused to become an official and chose a simple life in his hometown, continuing his teaching career.
