Family reunion, people looking forward to it

The last days of the year are busier, but Mr. Nguyen Tuan Tu in Dong Cam commune (Kim Thanh) still takes the time to clean the house, shop and decorate to wait for relatives to come home to celebrate Tet. Adjusting each branch of yellow apricot blossom, Mr. Tu said that on the 29th of Tet, he and his wife will be reunited.

In early 2024, right after the wedding, the couple went to work abroad in the Czech Republic. He returned home a month ago, and his wife will return later.

In previous years, working abroad with the Vietnamese community, Tet also had green sticky rice cakes, jams, watermelon seeds, pumpkin seeds... but it could not compare to the warm Tet with family in the homeland.

Anh Tu shared: “This is the first Tet my wife and I have been living together in our hometown, so we are really looking forward to it. When my wife gets home, I plan to go shopping for peach and kumquat trees together to create a more Tet atmosphere; visit relatives on both sides of the family and go to wish friends a happy new year. For me, Tet with relatives and friends is worth looking forward to.”

Many families have relatives working far away from home who cannot return home for Tet, so they can only call to ease their homesickness.

The Tet atmosphere is also bustling throughout the streets and alleys of Thuong Son village, Ky Son commune (Tu Ky). People clean and repair their houses to welcome the new year. Many people meet each other, in addition to greetings about health and Tet shopping, they also ask: "Will you come back this spring?".

Ky Son is one of the localities with a large number of people working abroad and settling abroad in Tu Ky district. Here, many families have 2-3 siblings and relatives living abroad.

Mr. Phan Ngoc Ha, whose child is working in Japan, said that he also wanted his child to return home to reunite with his family during Tet, but because of circumstances he could not return, he happily accepted.

For the past 7 years, Mr. Ha's son, Mr. Phan Si Hoi, has been away from home. During this time, Mr. Hoi has only returned home twice to visit his family, the most recent time being in September 2024.

When preparing for New Year's Eve, Mr. Hoi always calls home to wish his parents a happy new year, ask about them, and share the Tet holiday scene of Vietnamese workers in Japan. "During Tet, travel expenses are quite high and there is not much time off, so my family makes plans to meet at another time. Everyone wants the family to reunite and gather after a year of hard work, but for many reasons, we have to accept it. I also hope that one year, my children will come home in time for Tet," said Mr. Ha.

People who work or study far away just want to enjoy moments of reunion with their loved ones around the New Year's Eve dinner table. However, not everyone has the conditions to celebrate Tet with their family and relatives, especially those who work abroad. Therefore, there are families with all members, but there are also families waiting and waiting...

Tet full of love

Ms. Yen personally prepared Tet jam packages and many other gifts from her hometown to send to her children living in Taiwan.

Tet is an opportunity for people far from home to reunite, gather, and celebrate with their families, welcoming the good fortune of the new year. However, for those who cannot return home, Tet is still filled with love.

In just a few days, Ms. Nguyen Thuy An, wife of Mr. Tuan Tu, will be in her hometown Dong Cam. This is the first year celebrating Tet with her husband's family, so she has prepared carefully and thoroughly. She shared: "Through my husband, I have learned about the preferences of my family members. The gifts are all prepared by me and wrapped according to each person's preferences. I want to send my love to my family members and wish for a peaceful and lucky new year."

Every year, near Tet, Mrs. Tran Thi Hai Yen in Ky Son commune personally cooks coconut jam to send to her children in Taiwan.

In addition to Tet jam, the package also includes many Hai Duong specialties such as bean cakes, peanut candy and some other foods such as cham cheo, tapioca flour, etc. One year, when her children did not return home for Tet, Ms. Yen went to celebrate Tet with them. When she left, she brought dong leaves, strings, rice, etc. to wrap banh chung. For Ms. Yen, no matter where her children celebrate Tet, parents like her still take care of their children to have a full and warm Tet. Especially when they are in a foreign land, their children can feel the love of their parents and enjoy the flavors of their homeland.

"To ease my longing for my children and to wish them a full Tet, every year I send them some things. Even though it's not much, when I make these things myself, I feel happy, and my longing is lessened," Ms. Yen shared.

A happy and family-filled Tet holiday is perhaps the greatest joy for every child far from home. However, everywhere, people always turn to their families and prepare for the traditional Tet holiday of the nation filled with love.
