On the last working day of the Year of the Dragon, more than 200 doctors and nurses of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City performed organ transplants for four people from a brain-dead donor: a heart transplanted to a 12-year-old boy with restrictive cardiomyopathy; a liver transplanted to a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma; and two kidneys transplanted to two patients with end-stage chronic renal failure. The United Nations says the conflict between Israel and Hamas has set Gaza's economy back 60 years, and warns that raising the tens of billions of dollars needed to rebuild the enclave will be a daunting task. In an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's 55th annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Achim Steiner, head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), said nearly 65 percent of the structures in the Gaza Strip had been destroyed and that clearing some 42 million tons of earth and rock would be dangerous and complex.
