Argentina's presidential spokesman says the country will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than two weeks after a similar decision by the United States.

"President Javier Milei has instructed Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein to take charge of Argentina's withdrawal from the WHO," Manuel Adorni, spokesman for the Argentine President, said at a regular press conference on February 5.

Adorni said the decision was based on “profound differences” in health management between Argentina and the WHO, especially during the pandemic, noting that the country had undergone “the longest lockdown in human history” under the administration of former President Alberto Fernandez. Adorni added that the WHO had lost its “independence” due to political influence from some countries.

Following President Milei's instructions, Foreign Minister Werthein and his team are analyzing the legal implications of Argentina's withdrawal from international organizations.

The government led by the far-right party La Libertad Avanza believes that Argentina is participating in many international organizations that require large budget contributions without bringing any benefits to the South American country.

Argentina's decision came more than two weeks after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the US from the WHO. Mr. Trump also said that the WHO had failed to handle the Covid-19 pandemic and other global health crises due to a lack of necessary reforms, criticizing the agency for lacking independence from political influence. In addition, the US President said that the WHO had asked Washington for too high a contribution and unfairly compared to other countries.

WHO is the United Nations' leading health agency, established in 1948, with a primary mission to promote and protect global health. To achieve that goal, WHO coordinates international efforts, sets health standards, provides aid, and conducts research to improve health.

WHO is funded by mandatory fees from member states, as well as voluntary contributions and investments. Its current budget is about $6.8 billion, of which the United States contributes about 20%.
