For the first time in 20 years, Cristiano Ronaldo is not on the 2023 Ballon d'Or nomination shortlist.

Ronaldo had a turbulent 2022/23 season, ending his time playing in Europe, leaving MU and moving to Saudi Arabia.

Despite scoring 26 goals in 33 appearances for Al-Nassr, CR7 was still left out of the 30-man shortlist for the 2023 Ballon d'Or.

This is also the first time since 2003 that Cristiano Ronaldo has not been named in the Ballon D'Or award, leaving many fans of the Portuguese star disappointed.

In contrast to his competitive colleague on the world football stage for the past two decades, Lionel Messi is considered a strong candidate to win the Golden Ball this time.

Messi made his mark with his first World Cup title with Argentina. Since moving to Inter Miami, he has been scoring goals and creating an unprecedented impact in the US Major League Soccer.

Besides, talented young stars such as Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe or Jude Bellingham are all on the shortlist for the 2023 Ballon D'Or nomination.

Haaland had an extremely successful year at club level with Man "Blue" with a historic treble. The Norwegian striker also won the Premier League Golden Boot as well as the Champions League Player of the Year 2022/23.

In addition to Haaland, there are 6 other Man City members on the shortlist, including Kevin de Bruyne, Rodri, Ruben Dias, Julian Alvarez, Josko Gvardiol and Bernardo Silva.

The prestigious annual award is organized by France Football magazine. The winner of the 2023 Ballon D'Or will be announced at a gala on October 30.
