Grandmaster Le Quang Liem became the fourth player in history to win all 11 games to win the online blitz chess tournament Titled Tuesday, on the Chess platform.
Titled Tuesday takes place twice a week, on Tuesdays (morning and afternoon), attracting hundreds of players each tournament, with the condition of having a Grandmaster title or higher. The tournament Quang Liem just won had 943 players participating, including more than 100 Grandmasters, competing in 11 Swiss scoring rounds. The players in the world's Top 20 participating were Hikaru Nakamura, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Levon Aronian, Quang Liem and Hans Niemann.
In Quang Liem's 11 wins, more than half of his opponents were Grandmasters including Benjamin Gledura, Ihor Samunenkov, Oleksandr Bortnyk, Grigoriy Oparin, Nakamura and Praggnanandhaa.
The drama came in the final game, when Quang Liem had 10 points, meeting the second ranked player Praggnanandhaa with 9 points. When both players had only 2 seconds left, the Indian representative faced the opportunity to checkmate in one move. The number one Vietnamese player did not defend this move, but instead moved his queen into a position where four other pieces could be captured. Praggnanandhaa then ran out of time before moving, so he lost.
This victory helped Quang Liem become the fourth player to win 11 games at Titled Tuesday. This tournament has been held in the 11-game format since October 20, 2020. The three people who did that before Quang Liem were Magnus Carlsen, Nakamura and Jose Martinez.
This is Quang Liem's fourth championship at the tournament. The record for winning titles belongs to Nakamura with 69 first place finishes, followed by Carlsen with 25. Although he is the world's number one player, Carlsen's achievements are much lower than Nakamura's because he participates less often.
Quang Liem is not the most successful Vietnamese player in this arena, that is Le Tuan Minh. The 29-year-old player has won Titled Tuesday six times, after only 12 others. Besides, no other Vietnamese player has won.
