Chess player Le Quang Liem drew with Ruslan Ponomariov in both standard games, forcing him to play a rapid chess tie-break in the third round of the Chess World Cup.

In the second game of the third round on August 6, Quang Liem held the black pieces and never had the advantage over Ponomariov. The former FIDE champion showed a solid play, even though at times the computer assessed that White had the advantage. He proactively created a draw after 33 moves, without taking risks to find a way to win.

The two players will therefore have to spend an extra day playing a rapid chess tie-break, starting at 6pm today, August 7. They will play two 25-minute rapid chess games, adding 10 seconds after each move (25+10 format). If they are still tied, they will play two more 10+10 games. If they are still tied, they will play two 5+3 games. If they are still tied, they will play 3+2 games until there is a winner. Whoever advances in this match will meet Nikita Vitiugov or Ferenc Berkes - two players with lower Elo than Quang Liem.

Many experts will also have to play tie-break like Quang Liem in this round, such as Anish Giri, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So and defending champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda. The world's two top players Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura both advanced with a score of 1.5-0.5.

The second day of round three saw a surprise, as Uzbekistan prodigy Javokhir Sindarov, playing black, defeated master Maxime Vachier-Lagrave to reach the fourth round. Meanwhile, India's number one Gukesh Dommaraju continued his winning streak by defeating compatriot Narayanan Sunilduth Lyna to advance.

The Chess World Cup, held every two years, is the largest individual tournament for men and women. This year's tournament took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from July 30 to August 24, with 206 players in the Open category and 103 players in the Women's category. The players competed in a knockout round, with the top three players from each group qualifying for the Candidates. Vietnam has only one representative left in the tournament, 15th seed Quang Liem. His best result in the past was reaching the fourth round.
