On September 29, Somali security forces arrested a senior leader of Al-Shabaab, who was responsible for procuring weapons and explosive devices for many terrorist attacks across Somalia.
The Somali Ministry of Defense said the man arrested was Zakaria Kamal Sufi, who was responsible for procuring weapons and explosives for Al-Shabaab. He was arrested in a security operation after a lengthy investigation and intelligence.
Since July 2022, Somali security forces, supported by local militias, have launched a series of attacks on Islamist militants in an all-out campaign against Al-Shabaab. However, the group still controls some rural areas in southern and central Somalia, and continues to carry out large-scale attacks in the capital Mogadishu and elsewhere in the country.
