The Israeli army confirmed on June 15 (local time) that eight of its soldiers were killed in an explosion in Rafah City, the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip.

This is the deadliest incident for the Israeli military since January.

Preliminary information from the Israeli military investigation said the soldiers were all killed inside a Namer armored combat engineering vehicle.

The explosion occurred at around 5 a.m. the same day, as the convoy of soldiers had just finished a night attack on Hamas forces in the Tel Sultan neighborhood of Rafah. At that time, the convoy was heading to buildings controlled by the Israeli army to rest.

Israeli media added that it was not clear whether the explosion was caused by a pre-deployed bomb or whether Hamas members approached the car with an explosive device and placed it directly on the vehicle.

The deadliest incident for Israeli soldiers in Gaza occurred in January, when 21 soldiers were killed when Hamas forces collapsed two buildings.

In another development, the office of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced on the same day that the official will visit the US later this month and discuss current security developments with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin.

This will be the second time Secretary Gallant visits the US as the war in Gaza continues to develop in a complicated direction.

A statement from the US Pentagon confirmed that Secretary Austin had extended an invitation to Mr Gallant when they spoke by phone this week “to further discuss ongoing security developments in the Middle East”.
