The outage occurred on a large scale, in many regions around the world from around 6am on December 12, affecting all OpenAI services, such as ChatGPT, APIs as well as the latest product Sora.

Phuong Thanh (Ho Chi Minh City) said that when she started working in the morning, she could still access the ChatGPT application, although the results were "slower than usual". However, when she opened it on her computer, the website reported "ChatGPT is not available".

Many people have the same problem. AboveDownDetector, a tool that monitors the status of Internet services, reports of service errors skyrocketed to nearly 30,000. Many people said they were using the paid Plus version but still couldn't access it.

On OpenAI's service status update page, all five of the company's main services, including API, Labs, Playground, ChatGPT, and Sora, are in the red, representing the most serious level with a "major incident" status.

"We have identified the issue and are working on a fix," OpenAI's X social media account wrote just after 7 a.m.

The OpenAI incident occurred in the context of ChatGPT being integrated into iOS 18.2, which Apple released to users a few hours earlier. It is not yet clear whether this is the cause of the disruption.

Two days ago, the Sora video creation tool was officially deployed to users. At that time, the service also continuously encountered problems and was difficult to access due to the large number of people trying to experience it, forcing the company to temporarily stop creating new accounts.

In a report released in early December, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company's services have reached 300 million weekly active users.
