On July 30, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn in as the 9th President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Speaking at a ceremony broadcast live on national television, Mr. Pezeshkian expressed his commitment to "protecting the official religion, the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the country's constitution."

Mr Pezeshkian is expected to announce a new government within two weeks.

The event was also attended by senior officials from several countries including Armenia, Tajikistan, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Cuba and Brazil. European Union Special Envoy Enrique Mora also attended.

Mr Pezeshkian, 69, won Iran's presidential runoff on July 5. He is a reformist and heart surgeon who served as health minister under reformist President Mohammad Khatami from 2001 to 2005.

Mr. Pezeshkian called for "constructive relations" with Western countries to "bring Iran out of isolation," as well as support for restoring the historic nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

According to the original plan, Iran will hold a new presidential election in 2025. However, the election was pushed forward after President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash on May 19 in the mountains of the northwest of the country.
