The earliest match of round 17 of the Premier League between Nottingham and Tottenham ended with an easy victory for the away team despite having to play with one less player for nearly the last 30 minutes of the match.
Goal
Tottenham:Richarlison (45+2'), Kulusevski (65')
Red card
Tottenham:Bissouma (70')
Heading into the trip to the City Ground, coach Ange Postecoglou stuck with the same starting line-up as last weekend's win over Newcastle, with Richarlison playing as a centre-forward and captain Heung-min Son returning to his preferred left-sided role. Former Nottingham man Brennan Johnson played as a right-sided striker while Dejan Kulusevski played just behind Richarlison.
With a clearly attacking-minded squad, Tottenham took the initiative and had a chance to open the scoring in the third minute, but captain Heung-min Son could not beat goalkeeper Matt Turner. A few minutes later, former Nottingham player Brennan Johnson also forced goalkeeper Turner to work hard to block his shot.
Despite playing quite well against his old team, Brennan Johnson had a very sad day back at the City Ground when he was forced to leave the field in the 32nd minute due to injury to make way for Oliver Skipp. With this change, Kulusevski was moved to replace Johnson and it was the Swedish player who became the main character bringing victory to Tottenham in this match.
In the second minute of injury time of the first half, Kulusevski made a favorable pass for Richarlison to jump high and head the ball into the net of Nottingham, giving the home team the advantage before entering the break. It was also Kulusevski who sealed the victory for Tottenham in the 65th minute, when he took advantage of a poor clearance from goalkeeper Turner to unleash a powerful shot into the near corner.
While Kulusevski shone to bring victory to Tottenham, his Swedish teammate Anthony Elanga for Nottingham had a match to forget. The former Manchester United player missed a chance to score midway through the first half when he failed to beat goalkeeper Vicario in a one-on-one situation and when he did beat the visitors' goalkeeper in the second half, it was ruled out by VAR for offside.
Not only Elanga, Nottingham's attack had a very forgettable day, with many unfortunate missed situations. And with this defeat, Nottingham is now ranked 16th on the rankings with 14 points, only 5 points above the red light group but has played 1 more match. Meanwhile, Tottenham has 33 points after the win and although still ranked 5th, they have equaled the score with the 4th ranked team, Man City.
However, Tottenham's victory came at a heavy cost. In addition to Johnson's injury, Spurs were also without midfielder Yves Bissouma, who was sent off in the 70th minute after a dangerous tackle on a Nottingham player.
