Major technology companies in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) have made voluntary commitments to the US government to implement measures such as labeling AI-generated content to ensure the technology is used more safely.
These companies include OpenAI (owner of ChatGPT), Alphabet (owner of Google), and Meta Platforms (owner of Facebook).
A new White House announcement said the companies have committed to thoroughly testing systems before they go to market, sharing information about mitigation measures, and continuing to invest in cybersecurity.
The move is seen as a victory for the US government's efforts to regulate AI technology that is attracting investors and increasingly popular with users.
Since generative AI technology, which uses input data to create new content like ChatGPT, has become rapidly popular this year, lawmakers around the world have also begun to consider ways to mitigate the risks posed by this emerging technology to national security and the economy.
In June, US Senator Chuck Schumer called for comprehensive legislation to improve and ensure safety in the use of AI.
The US Congress is considering a bill that would require political ads to disclose if the content or images are generated by AI.
President Joe Biden, who met with companies at the White House on July 21, is also considering an executive order and a bipartisan bill on AI technology.
As part of this effort, seven technology companies (including the three companies mentioned above, plus Anthropic, Inflection, Amazon.com, and Microsoft) have committed to developing a system to label all content from text, images, audio to videos created by AI to provide users with information transparency.
This telltale sign will let users know that technology-generated images or sounds, such as violent scenes, are not real.
It is not yet clear what form the companies will attach the identification marks in.
The companies also pledged to put user privacy at the heart of AI development and ensure the technology is used impartially and without discriminating against vulnerable groups.
In addition, companies are also committed to developing AI solutions to solve scientific problems such as drug research and climate change mitigation.
