Nguyen Thi Hong Bich, 38 years old, initially admitted to using cyanide to poison her husband and three grandchildren over the past 10 months.
On July 7, after two days of being temporarily detained for his behaviorKillingBich admitted that, in addition to using cyanide to poison Long - her 18-year-old nephew, she also murdered Long's younger brother, another nephew, and the suspect's husband.
Bich said she lived with her brother and his wife (Long's father) in a level 4 house on Hung Vuong Street, Vinh Thanh Commune, Nhon Trach District, to sell rice. However, recently, Bich and her sister-in-law had a conflict over house repairs and buying a sink, so she got angry and had the idea of killing Long (a 12th grade student) to take revenge.
On June 22, while Long was studying alone, Bich approached him and criticized him for having a lot of acne on his face. She said she had the same problem before, and had taken liver-cooling medicine to detoxify and the acne had gone away. "If you take it, I will buy it for you," Bich confessed about how she lured her niece into carrying out her plot.
Long agreed, Bich went to a nearby pharmacy to buy medicine for leg pain, including a capsule. She poured the medicine out of the capsule, put cyanide in it, and gave it to Long to drink. A while later, Long became unconscious, and was discovered by his mother, who took him to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for emergency treatment. He is now out of danger.
In addition, from October 2023 to June this year, Bich personally used cyanide to poison three other family members, leading to death.
Specifically, on October 14, 2023, thinking that her 38-year-old husband was a gambler and in debt, Bich put cyanide in his daily medicine and gave it to him to drink. Four days later, he died.
After her husband died, Bich thought her younger sister was prying into her "outside affairs" and had conflicts over money, so she poisoned her 7-year-old daughter. At the end of May, Bich poisoned Long's 12-year-old younger sibling because of an "argument" with the children's mother.
Searching Bich's residence and related locations, the police seized many exhibits; among them was a white plastic bottle containing crystals weighing about 0.7 kg, which Bich hid in a cemetery near her house. The results of the forensic examination by the Criminal Techniques Department of Dong Nai Province Police determined that this was cyanide, an extremely toxic substance.
The investigation agency determined that Bich owed money to many people. After her husband and children died, the suspect received 800 million VND in insurance money, which she used to pay off debts and spend.
Meanwhile, Bich stated that the cause of the crime was "conflicts in love and family life". The investigation agency said that this was the initial statement, and will continue to clarify Bich's motive and purpose; at the same time, clarify the cause of the unusual death of Mr. Hai (Bich's father) and Bich's child.
Previously, a relative of Long, who saw something fishy about his nephew being poisoned with extremely toxic cyanide, reported it to the police, and pointed out 5 unusual deaths in Bich's family in just the previous 8 months. When they died, these people were said to have had the same symptoms of headaches, difficulty breathing, vomiting, cardiac arrest... as Long.
