According to RT (Russia), the Russian Ministry of Transport has confirmed that the road surface on one of the bridge's rails has been damaged. However, the agency has not confirmed information about larger damage and affirmed that the bridge spans are still safe on their supports.

Telegram accounts Baza and Mash shared images and videos from the scene, showing significant damage to the bridge connecting the Crimean peninsula and mainland Russia, with one of its spans lower than the others.

In a related development, the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAK) said the Crimean bridge was the target of a drone attack by the Ukrainian side.

NAK said the important route connecting the Crimean peninsula with mainland Russia was attacked by two Ukrainian unmanned vehicles at sea at around 3 a.m. on July 17 (local time).

Earlier, Crimea Governor Sergey Aksyonov said that traffic on the Crimean Bridge was suspended on the morning of the same day, due to an emergency in the area of bridge pier No. 145 from the Krasnodar region.

Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said a couple living in the region were killed and their daughter was injured. The girl was taken to hospital and is in intensive care, RIA Novosti reported.

Ukraine has not commented on the above allegations.

According to Reuters, spokeswoman for the Southern Command of the Ukrainian army - Ms. Natalia Humeniuk - said that the incident on the Crimea bridge could be a provocation from Russia.

Earlier in October 2022, the 19-km Crimean Bridge was damaged in an explosion. A truck bomb exploded on the bridge on October 8, 2022, collapsing two spans and killing three people. Seven fuel tanks from a freight train on the adjacent railway caught fire. Russian President Vladimir Putin at the time called the explosion on the bridge a terrorist attack aimed at destroying civilian infrastructure.

Kiev officials have never directly claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Andrey Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s General Intelligence Directorate, has said the Crimean bridge was a “redundant structure” and declined to elaborate.
