NATO said on December 13 that it would increase its military budget for 2024 by 12% to 2.03 billion euros (about 2.19 billion USD) and its civilian budget by 18.2% to 438.1 million euros (equivalent to 472.6 million USD).

In announcing the move, NATO said that strengthening and expanding the use of NATO's common funding allows allies to more effectively address common security challenges.

NATO's civilian budget provides funding for the personnel, operating costs and program expenditures of NATO headquarters and its international staff, while the military budget covers the operating costs of headquarters, missions and operations of NATO Command Structures around the world.

Recently, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for strengthening the military alliance in a context where all major arms control mechanisms no longer exist.

NATO has now stepped up surveillance activities along its eastern flank following the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022.
